    Malaysia cancels 2026 Commonwealth Games

Malaysia announced on Friday (22nd) that it had decided not to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. After deliberation, the Malaysian cabinet concluded that funding from the Commonwealth Games Federation could not cover the funds required to host this large-scale international sports event.

The Malaysian government stated that hosting the Commonwealth Games requires huge investment, including expenditures on venue construction, security, transportation and other aspects, and the funds provided by the Commonwealth Games Federation are not sufficient to cope with these expenditures. Therefore, in order to avoid financial pressure and waste of resources, Malaysia decided to give up the right to host.

The move caused some controversy, with some believing that Malaysia missed an opportunity to enhance the country's image and promote sports development. However, some people support the government's decision and believe that hosting the Commonwealth Games will impose a heavy financial burden on Malaysia under the current economic situation.

The Malaysian government stated that although it has given up the right to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, it will continue to support and participate in this grand international sports event. Malaysia will actively participate in various activities of the Commonwealth Games and provide support and assistance for its smooth hosting.

In general, Malaysia’s decision to give up hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games is based on economic considerations. The government hopes that through this decision, it will avoid unnecessary burdens on the national finances, while also making better use of limited resources to promote the country's economic development and the healthy development of sports.
