In a written reply to a question from a member of the Legislative Council, the Secretary for Labor and Welfare, Mrs Sun Yuk-han, said that the government’s estimated expenditure in 2024-2025 for reimbursing underpaid fares to public transport operators participating in the $2 fare discount scheme is about 60.1 billion. This measure aims to encourage more citizens to use public transportation and reduce the use of private cars, thereby reducing traffic congestion and air pollution.
Sun Yuhan said that this preferential plan will have a positive impact on Hong Kong's environment and traffic conditions. She hopes that in the next few years, more citizens will be able to enjoy this discount, thereby jointly building a more environmentally friendly and convenient city.
